Addo African Home sits quietly at the boundary where farmland meets wilderness. The property was originally built in the early 20th century, and that history is still alive in the architecture — a blend of Khoi-San tradition and colonial form, softened by a French aesthetic sensibility that runs through every detail.

Today, the estate is a working eco lodge: Fifteen thoughtfully appointed rooms across two distinct accommodation styles, a natural swimming pool, an organic kitchen garden, and the kind of unhurried pace that reminds you why you came.

Addo African Home offers 15 different rondavels, each with its own character, but sharing the same commitment to quality, comfort, and considered design.

All rooms are decorated with a careful blend of African warmth and French detail. Expect natural materials, handpicked furnishings, modern bathrooms, and the kind of quiet that only comes when a property is designed with intention.

The kitchen garden at Addo African Home is not decorative — it's functional, tended daily, and central to how the lodge operates. Salads, herbs, tomatoes, beetroot, cauliflower, seasonal vegetables — what grows here goes directly to the table at Molo Lolo Restaurant.

The garden is also home to our small hen house, whose residents contribute something equally essential: the freshest eggs you'll have for breakfast, collected each morning before you've finished your coffee. Students from the NukaKamma Hospitality School learn to cook from this garden — from soil to plate, from lesson to service. It's a full circle that tastes better than it sounds.

Our swimming pool is natural and chemical-free. Water is filtered entirely through living plant matter and micro-organisms — no chlorine, no chemicals, nothing artificial. It stays clear, cool, and genuinely clean, the way water used to be before we decided to improve it.

The pool sits within the garden, shaded and unhurried. It's the ideal spot for an afternoon with a book, a glass of wine from the Eastern Cape, or a slow conversation that has nowhere to be. Private dinners can be arranged on the poolside terrace for those looking for something a little more romantic.

The land Addo African Home sits on has been farmed since the early 1900s. The citrus orchards that once defined this property are part of the landscape that surrounds the lodge today — a reminder that this valley has always been a place of cultivation, of patience, and of things growing slowly in good soil.

Addo itself sits in the Sundays River Valley — one of the Eastern Cape's most significant agricultural regions — where citrus groves stretch between low hills and the air carries the faint sweetness of orange blossom in season.

Just ten minutes from the main gate of Addo Elephant National Park, the lodge sits at a rare intersection: working farmland, Big 7 (Big 5 plus the whale and great white shark), wilderness, and community life, all within reach of each other. Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) is 75 kilometres to the south. The Zuurberg Mountains rise to the north, home to hiking trails and one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Eastern Cape. There is no shortage of things to do here. But the landscape also gives you permission to do nothing at all.
